To solve this, I usually create an image with a descriptive name and use that image in the column. On mouse over the name of the image is shown.
However, I agree it would be nice to set a tooltip programmatically; based on the column value. This is also useful for other (non-icon) columns.
In the Notes client, the title of the icons is displayed on mouseover. When viewed from a web browser, the alt attribute is filled.
