Documents on a server replica are locked on that server by default.
If you have other replicas you can use the document locking feature to lock across multiple servers.
You can also set the conflict handling on the form properties to "Do Not Create Conflicts".
Isn't the document locking feature of Notes/Domino (since R6) what you are looking for?
