Is this for the Notes client or in Xpages? Your idea is listed in "Domino Designer & XPages & App Dev"
If you mean the Notes this functionality already exists...
You can run any kind of formula -- including those arithmetical operations in any field beside richtext fields.
If you press Shift-F9 the expression you entered will be evaluated. This works for all type of formulas.
This feature is in Notes for a very long time, but I guess not well documented.
I am using it all the time and it is very helpful.
For example @ConfigFile gives you the path to the current notes.ini
For calculations I am using it all the time as well.

Should work in Notes Client by pressing SHIFT+F9 when field has focus
