Support passwordless web authentication using FIDO2 Security Keys Merged

This idea suggests, that Domino should add passwordless web authentication using Security Keys or Passkeys (e.g. FIDO2 / WebAuthn).

  • Passwords have an inherent risk for phishing attacks, password re-use, password leakage etc.

  • FIDO2 Passkeys are resistant to phishing attacks and solve the above problems.

  • Passwordless authentication with FIDO2 Passkeys is considered strong authentication (note: Passkeys themselves may be protected by PIN or Biometrics, providing client-side MFA)

  • MFA on top of passwords is a way to work around the problems of a broken, outdated technology - passwords.


This idea must not be confused with support for Security Keys, FIDO2, WebAuthn as a second factor (MFA), because these approaches still depend on passwords for primary authentication.

This idea here is about getting rid of passwords for web authentication altoghether.
