Most other applications allow snapshot backups. This isn't just for Windows with VSS but also on Linux via file-system snapshots or storage snapshots.
Even point in time might be difficult, having a simple, consistent backup with modern solutions like Veeam, Cohesity or similar solution is important for current customer deployments.
I recall Lotusphere lab discussions from around 10 years ago, where we already asked for the technical details about why VSS and other types of snapshots are not supported and what could be changed.
Having an on-line simple backup solution without the need for a C-API backup integration would be helpful! Even this might be difficult to implement.

I'm seeing another thing coming and that is encrypted backups with working deduplication to keep backup sizes down.
I agree. Perhaps IBM can also add VSS to the Notes client, for backup of open local applications and archives.
Here is a support technote from 2007 https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21196479
We are writing now the year 2018 and Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS) isn't still supported!
Since two years, we are using Veeam Backup Services with own freeze Scripts to set the server / databases somehow in a consitent state. But we have periodically problems with server crashes in this context.
The necessary script is only a woraround solution, because Domino doesn't support VSS for backing-up the system.
As far in know all other main vendors are supporting VSS
Why not Domino?
Please support
I even would go further. Third party tools for backup are necessary for a lot of companies that already have IBM Domino out there. Get in touch with the backup solutions providers so they support Domino again.
