Give a progress bar or percent complete on server tasks running against databases

When performing a task on a database from the server console, there is no telling how long it will take or what kind of progress is being made. Sometimes these processes take many minutes or even hours. I need to see some kind of metrics on the progress it is making.

Story: I start fixup on a 50 GB database. After an hour into a 6 hour available maintenance window, it is still running. Is it going to complete in my time window or should I interrupt it and take alternative actions? I need a metric on the progress of the task to make that decision.

I bring the server down to run offline maintenance on system databases. I may need fixup, compact, updall, dbmt. How long will it take before I can get the server started again? Will it be in an hour or will it be in 8 hours? I need some metric on the progress on each of these tasks to make an estimate of that time.
