Port check tool

I want a tool to check the life / death of the network port.
Access between the java console and the server may be lost, so I want a tool to monitor it and report it when it stops.

Something like the trace console command but as a command line tool so it can be included in monitoring tools like nagios. It should check if there is really some response from the server and not just check if a connection could be established.
