Any news on this feature? It is under consideration but the idea is already 5 years old and pretty well voted on. Same with Verse : https://domino-ideas.hcltechsw.com/ideas/VRSOP-I-450

add a facetted search capability for the tags also then
I definitely believe that some way to tag a mail item is extremely beneficial. Yes, folders can be used to obtain similar usability, but I find that approach slightly more cumbersome than using categories or tags. I believe the biggest benefit of categories and tags can be seen with shared mailboxes being used as a simple tracking system.
Moving idea to product : Domino Server/Templates
Add a conversion folders to tags to this. This can help with the adaption process for people who live in folders.
"With the folders no" - Not really true. Press Ctrl while dragging a memo from the source folder (e.g. Inbox), then it will create another reference of the same document in the target folder instead of just moving the document reference from the source to the target folder. From then, the document appears in more than one folder.
Once, before Notes folders existed, tags existed but under a different name "Categories". After availability of folders the ability to categorize (="tag") messages had been removed from Notes mail template. (The still existing Notes System Action "Categorize..." is a leftover from that pre-Notes v4 era.)
