Even the latest Domino server and Notes client, i.e. 10.0.1, come with their own built-in JVM from IBM. That means, you do not have to worry about Oracle's licencing conditions changing. See also https://developer.ibm.com/javasdk/support/commercial-licensing/.
Re. "any java applets clientside needs to be replaced with other techniques", as mentioned in a previous comment: I don't think that is accurate. The JVM that comes with Notes (including Notes 10) does support Java applets under Windows (unfortunately not MacOS).
We need new java tech and features such as servlet 3.0/4.0 ! Replace JVM with OpenJVM to catch the future!
As far as I know Sametime and Domino uses IBM java on server side and any java applets clientside needs to be replaced with other techniques.
