Indeed, aspecially useful for mail-in databases where teams need to know what has been read by a team member.
I heard this request a handfull of times from my customers.
It might be usefull in Mail-In Databases where several users work in the same inbox. Of course there are other ways (Use a workflow application, move to folders ...)to solve this problem, but it does not satisfy those customers.
