We're working on designs to make the Contact List much more accessible or visible. The image you've provide is one concept we have in mind, but group chat Participant List would add another pane (too much). Another option is to add icons to switch between contact list and most recent chats, retaining the last view selected when reconnecting. Thanks for the confirmation this is a needed design change.
