In DBCS (Double Byte Character Set) countries, italic is not commonly used due to ugly and hard-to-recognize typeface.
See attached GIF. Italic Kanji part is jaggy and cross-lined resulting in hard-to-read, although SBCS part is not.
Italic is used in DBCS countries only when font size is large enough not to show jagginess like large advertizement.
