The customer uses automatic geographic location switching in Sametime for HCL Notes and relies on this functionality for all users due to frequent remote work.
While the feature generally works as expected, users who connect through a VPN are sometimes prompted to manually select a new geographic location. This behavior disrupts the user experience and creates inconsistency in the presence/location status.
The customer requests an enhancement that would allow administrators to centrally manage and automate location assignment for VPN-based connections, including:
A policy setting or notes.ini parameter that can automatically assign a predefined location (for example, “VPN Home Office”) when a user connects from a known VPN IP range.
The ability to map specific IP ranges (VPN subnets) to a defined Sametime geographic location.
An option to force the Notes/Sametime client to treat the VPN connection as the primary or local IP, automatically setting the user’s location and presence status (e.g., Home Office) without prompting the user.
Centralized administration so this behavior can be consistently enforced for all users, eliminating manual selection and reducing user confusion.
This enhancement would significantly improve usability for remote and hybrid workers, ensure consistent presence information, and reduce support overhead related to location prompts for VPN users.
It would also be appropriate if the user logged in to Sametime from Verse so that, similar to the mobile client (picture of a mobile phone), a globe indicating an internet browser would be displayed on the business card.
