It would be nice if the field background could be used as an indicator
I usually use a standard <computed text> field and simply copy that everywhere it is needed.
I usually to add a red star * to the field label to indicate mandatory fields (a common feature on many web forms). You can even hide this when not in edit mode, by using tables and putting the * in a separate column in front of the text, or by using different text in read and edit modes.
